Greene County Circuit Court Overview
Missouri has 46 judicial circuits, and Greene County is its own circuit, the 31st. The Missouri Courts civic education page states that circuit courts are courts of original civil and criminal jurisdiction and that most cases begin there. In Greene County, the Circuit Court hears civil suits over $25,000, all felony cases, family law, juvenile matters, probate, and appeals from associate division decisions.
The Circuit Court runs out of the Greene County Judicial Courts Facility at 1010 N. Boonville Avenue in Springfield. The same building holds the Circuit Clerk, every judge's chambers, the public service counter, jury check-in, and the new Treatment Court space that opened in January 2025. The Court Divisions page lists 19 active divisions under the 31st Judicial Circuit umbrella.
Greene County is a high-volume court. The Circuit Clerk's office reports that the 31st Judicial Circuit handles more than 38,000 new cases each year, a mix of traffic tickets, civil suits, misdemeanors, and felonies. That case load shapes hearing schedules, security, and the staffing pattern at the courthouse.
Divisions of the Greene County Circuit Court
The 31st Judicial Circuit is split into seven Circuit Divisions, six Associate Divisions, four Family Court Commissioner divisions, a Treatment Court, and a Probate Court. Every division sits in the same building on North Boonville. The Presiding Judge oversees the circuit, and each division has its own docket clerk and case assignment rules.

Circuit Court vs Associate Court vs Municipal Court
Missouri groups its trial courts into divisions of a single circuit court rather than separate trial courts. Still, the Circuit Division, Associate Division, and Municipal Division each cover different case types and dollar limits. Knowing where a case sits helps when you read a Case.net entry or plan a courthouse visit.
| Circuit Division | Associate Division | Municipal Division | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Civil dollar limit | Over $25,000 and equity cases | $25,000 or less, plus small claims | City ordinance fines only |
| Criminal jurisdiction | All felonies after bind-over | Misdemeanors and felony preliminary hearings | City ordinance violations |
| Family and probate | Yes, through Family and Probate divisions | No | No |
| Traffic | Trial de novo on appeal | State traffic citations and infractions | City traffic ordinances |
| Appeal goes to | Missouri Court of Appeals | Circuit Division for trial de novo | Associate or Circuit Division for trial de novo |

That policy is the main reason newer Greene County Circuit Court filings can be read online while older filings still require a clerk visit.
31st Judicial Circuit and Greene County
Greene County is a single-county circuit. That means the 31st Judicial Circuit covers only Greene County and shares no judges with neighboring counties. The Presiding Judge sets local court rules, jury rotation, and division case assignment for the entire circuit.
The Missouri court system reports cases through Case.net by circuit. A search filtered to the 31st Judicial Circuit returns Greene County cases only. The Circuit Clerk in Springfield is the custodian for all 31st Circuit case records, including civil, domestic, criminal, traffic, finance, and probate filings, as listed on the Circuit Clerk landing page.
Older case storage uses different access rules. Online coverage on Case.net starts in 2008 for civil and domestic cases and 2006 for criminal and traffic. Records before those dates may sit in physical files at the Circuit Clerk's office or with the Greene County Archives. The archives list shows Circuit Court records from 1833 to 1991 in the historical archive.

Municipal Divisions in Greene County
City ordinance cases and city traffic tickets do not run through the Circuit Court directly. Each city in Greene County has its own municipal division with its own judge, clerk, and docket. Appeals from a municipal division can move to the Associate or Circuit Division for a trial de novo.
Active municipal courts in Greene County include Springfield, Battlefield, Republic, Strafford, Willard, Ash Grove, Fair Grove, and Walnut Grove. The municipal court contact list publishes the official phone numbers for each. Many use the statewide Show-Me Courts system, and citation lookups for those cities appear in Case.net once the court joins.
Note: Municipal traffic cases that are bound over or appealed move into the state system through the Associate Division, so a search may return both versions of the same ticket.
Federal Court for Greene County
Federal civil and criminal cases tied to Greene County sit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri, Springfield Division. Federal cases are not searchable on Case.net and do not appear in the Circuit Clerk's records. The federal docket uses PACER for public access and CM/ECF for filings.
