How to Search Greene County Court Records

The official public search tool is Missouri Case.net. It is free, runs around the clock, and covers every participating circuit and municipal division that uses the statewide case management system. The Missouri Case.net overview page says the portal allows searches by case number, litigant name, or date. Greene County cases sit under the 31st Judicial Circuit.

Before you start, have a few pieces of information ready. A correct legal name, a case number from a ticket or notice, an approximate filing year, or a hearing date all narrow the result list.

  1. Open the Case.net portal.
  2. Pick a search type from the menu, such as Litigant Name Search or Case Number Search.
  3. If the search type allows it, set the court to Greene County / 31st Judicial Circuit.
  4. Enter the name, case number, filing date, or hearing date.
  5. Review the result list and open the case that matches.
  6. Read the case header, the Parties & Attorneys tab, and the Docket Entries tab.
  7. For a certified copy, file a paper or email request with the Greene County Circuit Clerk.

Types of Greene County Court Records

The 31st Judicial Circuit groups its records by division. The Circuit Clerk site lists Civil, Domestic, Criminal, Traffic, Finance, and Probate as the main case-type families. Municipal divisions add city ordinance and traffic cases. Each family produces a different set of filings, but all sit inside the same Case.net index.

Court Operating Rule 2 says the records are presumed open unless a statute, rule, or order closes them.

  • Civil cases — circuit (over $25,000) or associate (under $25,000), plus landlord/tenant, mechanic's liens, and small claims.
  • Criminal cases — felony and misdemeanor filings with charges, bond, plea, disposition, and sentence.
  • Domestic cases — dissolution, custody, paternity, modification, and protection orders.
  • Probate cases — estates, small estate affidavits, refusal of letters, and guardianship.
  • Traffic cases — state and associate traffic citations, plus eligible Pay By Web filings.
  • Juvenile cases — confidential under RSMo 211.321 and not shown by name on Case.net.

Public Access Framework for Greene County Court Records

Court records in Missouri are governed by Court Operating Rule 2. The rule presumes that case records are open unless a statute, rule, or order makes them confidential. Missouri's remote public access rules expanded online document viewing on July 1, 2023, for qualifying public documents filed on or after that date.

Anyone can use Case.net. There is no court fee for the search itself, only the requester's internet cost. Certified copies do carry a fee, set by the Circuit Clerk. Some case types require photo ID before the clerk releases copies.

Note: Case.net public information is a service of the Missouri Judiciary, not the official certified court record. Use a Circuit Clerk certified copy for legal proceedings.

Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Greene County

Several record types are closed by Missouri statute or court rule. Juvenile records are confidential under RSMo 211.321, with limited exceptions. Adoption records are confidential. Mental health and guardianship evidence is restricted. Active investigative police records can be closed under RSMo 610.100 while the case is open. Protection-order petitioner information may not show in a public name search before a full order is entered. The image below comes from the official Missouri juvenile records statute page.

How Far Back Greene County Court Records Go Online

Not every Greene County case is online. Case.net coverage has a start date that depends on the case type. The Circuit Clerk notes that civil and domestic cases are online from 2008 to the present, while criminal and traffic cases are online from 2006 to the present.

Older cases still exist; they are just not in the online index. Civil and domestic cases before 2008 and criminal and traffic cases before 2006 are handled through older-case procedures at the Circuit Clerk's office. For historic files, the Greene County Archives holds Circuit Court records from 1833 to 1991 and probate records from 1833 to 1990. A researcher looking for an old case should start with the year and the party name, then ask the Clerk or the Archives where that file now lives.
